Northern Quarter Coffee Crawl, Four Independent Cafes Worth the Trip to Manchester

Ezra and Gil cafe in the Northern Quarter Manchester

Manchester’s Northern Quarter has a serious claim to being Britain’s best neighbourhood for independent coffee. Tucked between vintage shops, record stores and street art, the area packs an almost unfair number of brilliant cafes into a few walkable streets. We picked four standouts, each with its own personality, and all of them worth building a morning around.

Ezra & Gil

Start at 20 Hilton Street, where Ezra & Gil has been feeding the Northern Quarter since long before brunch became a competitive sport. The industrial-chic room, all exposed brick and communal tables, fills up fast at weekends, and it is easy to see why. The all-day brunch menu is the main event. Regulars rave about the Nduja scrambled eggs and a French toast dusted with cinnamon sugar that reviewers describe as crisp outside and soft inside. Coffee is taken seriously here, with flat whites and iced coffees earning some of the warmest praise in the city. It is dog-friendly and laptop-friendly, with window seats and plug sockets, and doors open at 7.30am on weekdays for the early crowd. Rated around 4.6 on Google, the only real complaints are the ones every great cafe gets. It gets busy, waits can stretch at peak brunch hours, and your wallet will notice.

Fig + Sparrow

A short walk away at 20 Oldham Street, Fig + Sparrow is the Northern Quarter at its most charming. Part cafe, part lifestyle shop, it is small in the way that makes you want to stay longer, all soft lighting and sanded wood. The coffee is superb, with flat whites that regulars call some of the best in Manchester, and the brunch punches well above its size. Turkish eggs and a celebrated cinnamon bun lead a menu that keeps vegans and brunch lovers equally happy. Grab a window seat if you can, because people-watching on Oldham Street is half the fun. It holds a 4.9 rating from more than 200 Google reviews and opens 9am to 4pm daily. Go early, because the little room fills quickly and a few reviewers note prices sit at the premium end.

Foundation Coffee House

For the work-from-cafe crowd, Foundation Coffee House at Sevendale House, 40 Lever Street, is the pick. This is a big, buzzy room built for lingering, with plenty of seating, a pet-friendly policy and baristas who get namechecked in reviews for their skill. The menu runs from banana bread and overnight oats to eggs benedict and a much-loved biscoff milkshake. Coffee quality is consistently praised, and at around 4.3 on Google across nearly 2,000 reviews it has earned a loyal following. Hours are 7.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 5pm at weekends. It can get loud when full and service occasionally wobbles at peak times, and one long-timer publicly mourned a shrunken eggs Benedict, but for a productive morning over great coffee it is hard to beat.

Siop Shop

Finish on Tib Street at Siop Shop, 53 Tib Street, where the doughnuts have a genuine cult following. This is the sweet-toothed stop on the crawl. The filled doughnuts are the headline act, from the coffee bean doughnut with coffee cream to strawberry custard with a jammy centre and the peanut butter and banana fritter, and the coffee is far better than a bakery sidekick has any right to be. Reviewers call it one of their favourite coffee shops in Manchester full stop, and the 4.7 rating from around a thousand Google reviews backs that up. Hours are 8.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 4pm at weekends. Expect a queue when the counter is packed, and at nearly four pounds a pastry some find it steep, but the inventive seasonal rotations keep people coming back.

Four cafes, four moods, one very walkable neighbourhood. Start early at Ezra & Gil, drift to Fig + Sparrow for a mid-morning flat white, set up camp at Foundation for the working lunch, then reward yourself with a doughnut at Siop Shop. That is a Northern Quarter day done right.
