The Best Day Trips from London by Train

david

You do not need a car to escape London. These are the best day trips by train, all reachable in under two hours from the capital.

Bath

One of the great English cities, and an easy 90 minutes from Paddington. The Roman Baths, the Abbey, the Royal Crescent and some of the country’s best independent shops and restaurants. Book the Baths in advance and allow a full day.

Oxford

Under an hour from Paddington or Marylebone, Oxford packs the colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, the covered market and beautiful riverside walks into a compact centre. Climb a college tower for the classic dreaming-spires view.

Cambridge

Around 50 minutes from King’s Cross, Cambridge offers punting on the Cam, King’s College Chapel, the Fitzwilliam Museum and lovely riverside pubs. Go on a weekday to avoid the worst of the crowds.

Brighton

Britain’s most fun seaside city is barely an hour from Victoria or London Bridge. The Lanes, the Royal Pavilion, the beach and a food scene that punches well above its weight. Perfect for a spontaneous day out.

Canterbury

An hour from St Pancras on the high-speed line, Canterbury pairs a magnificent cathedral with medieval streets, independent shops and good pubs. Combine with a walk along the river Stour.

Windsor

Half an hour from Paddington or Waterloo, Windsor Castle is the headline, but the Long Walk, Eton across the river and the riverside restaurants make it a full day.

Rye

A bit further at around 90 minutes with a change, Rye is worth it for its cobbled streets, ancient pubs and the wild beauty of Camber Sands nearby.

Tips for day trips

  • Book advance train tickets for the best prices, especially to Bath, Oxford and Canterbury
  • Start early. Arriving before 10am gives you the sights before the crowds
  • Check engineering works on weekends, which can add significant journey time
  • Pack for the weather and wear walking shoes. The best bits of these towns are explored on foot
